遠浅の海に浮かぶ小島モン・サンミッシェル。古くはケルト人が「墓の山」と呼び、信仰の対象としていた。

8世紀にノルマンディー司教オーペールが、大天使ミカエルのお告げを受け礼拝堂を建てた。そして11世紀にはロマネスク様式の大聖堂と修道院が、13世紀にはゴシック様式の回廊と食堂が最上階に造られ、だんだんと巡礼地として栄えるようになったんだ。

 

1979年世界遺産登録。登録理由は、 ① 海に立つ美しい修道院の姿    ② 様々な建築様式が混在する建築様式 ③時代の激動の歴史を伝える (要塞として使われていた建物も現存する)

だから、「墓の山」とも呼ばれていたんだね。

 

海の影響で牧草は塩分とミネラルが豊富となり、その牧草を食べる仔羊の肉には独特の味わいが!
プレサレと呼ばれる仔羊は、モン・サン・ミッシェル湾の牧草地で飼育された特別の子羊。
味が絶妙なんだって。

Perched on a shallow sea, there's a small island called Mont-Saint-Michel. In ancient times, it was known as the "Mountain of Tombs" by the Celtic people and held significance as a place of worship.  

In the 8th century, Bishop Aubert of Normandy received a revelation from the archangel Michael and built a chapel. Later, in the 11th century, a Romanesque-style abbey and monastery were constructed, followed by Gothic-style corridors and a dining hall on the upper floors in the 13th century. Over time, it gradually flourished as a pilgrimage site.

In 1979, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The reasons for its registration were its beautiful abbey standing in the sea, the blend of various architectural styles, and its ability to convey the turbulent history of different eras (there're the remaining fortifications).

That's why it was also known as the "Mountain of Tombs."

The influence of the sea enriches the grass with salt and minerals, resulting in a unique flavor in the meat of lambs that feed on this grass. The lambs, known as "Pré Salé," are special lambs raised in the pastures of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay. Their taste is said to be exquisite. If you visit, you should try it out! 💛
