ギリシャ北西部のテッサリア地方にある“メテオラ”は、奇岩群とその上に建つメテオラ修道院群の総称で、

奇岩群という地形と、ギリシア正教修道院の文化的な価値が認められた、数少ない複合遺産です。

メテオラとは、ギリシャ語の「メテオロス＝中空に浮かぶ」に由来していて、24の修道院のうち、6つは現在も修道院としての活動を続けています。奇岩群は、6000万年前頃から海底に堆積した砂岩が隆起してできたもの。

修道士の多くが、14世紀にセルビア王国の侵攻から逃れ、アトス山からこの地にやって来たということです。

アギア・トリアダ修道院

至聖三者（三位一体の神）に捧げられている、このアギア・トリアダ修道院は、完全な断崖絶壁に建てられていて、1925年までは縄梯子か滑車付きの巻き上げ機しかなかったとか。

最近は、その景観や価値から、観光地化が急速に進んでいるため、世俗を避ける修道生活に適さなくなりつつあるとして、他に移る修道士も増えているそうです。

Meteora is located in the Thessaly region in northwest Greece.

It is a collective term for a group of peculiar rock formations and the monasteries built on top of them. It is one of the few complex heritage sites recognized for its unique rock formations and the cultural value of the Greek Orthodox monasteries. The name "Meteora" originates from the Greek word "meteōros," which means "suspended in the air."

Out of the 24 monasteries, six of them are still active as monastic communities.

The rock formations were formed by sandstone sedimentation that occurred approximately 60 million years ago on the seabed.

Many monks came to this place from Mount Athos to escape the invasion of the Kingdom of Serbia in the 14th century. Monastery of Agia Triada, dedicated to the Holy Trinity (the Holy Three-in-One God), is built on a sheer cliff and, until 1925, could only be accessed by rope ladders or hoisting devices.

Recently, due to its landscape and value, it has rapidly become a tourist destination, leading to an increase in the number of monks relocating to other places as the monastic lifestyle becomes less suitable for avoiding secular influences.
